Although recycling has an important role to play, in most cases it can’t be the entire solution. Companies must find innovative new ways to reduce and reuse raw material inputs, creating a circular economy around their products.
Packaging is our largest scope 3 emission, representing over 40% of total carbon emissions. That makes it a top priority, so we’re focusing on improving the recycled content, recyclability and weight of all of our materials.

In 2021, LION made a Plastics Pledge to phase out shrink wrap packaging in Australia by 2023. We successfully eliminated shrink wrap for 6-pack cans and then extended our target timeframe to 2025 for the rest of our packaging, due to COVID supply chain disruptions.
We’re currently updating this target timeframe due to market conditions and no cost-effective substitute to shrink wrap being available. Although shrink-wrap only represents 0.16% of our total packaging, we remain committed to phase out single use and unnecessary plastic packaging to eliminate any risk of plastic pollution.
Our involvement in Australian container deposit schemes stretches back over 40 years. Support of the container deposit schemes forms part of our commitment to drive further improvements in return and reuse rates, as well as litter reduction. Today, we estimate that close to 70% of containers we put into the Australian marketplace are now returned through container deposit schemes or kerbside recycling.
