Reading Food Labels
Food Labels – what is their role?
Food labels help guide consumers with their food and beverage choices, explaining what’s in a product and how best to safely enjoy it.
The mandatory information required on a food label in Australia and New Zealand is regulated by Food Standards Australia & New Zealand (FSANZ). Most packaged foods and drinks are required to carry a label.
The majority of Lion’s dairy and drinks products carry a nutrition information panel (NIP), which offers an easy way to understand the nutrition content of a product. Information is listed per serving size, as well as per 100g/100mL, which allows comparisons between similar products.
Alcohol is not legally required to include a NIP unless a nutrition or health claim is being made. However, Lion’s alcohol beverage business in Australia decided to voluntarily add the NIP to its Lion-owned beers to help consumers learn more about the energy, carbohydrate and sugar content. Lion Dairy & Drinks is proud to be adopting the Health Star Rating (HSR) front-of-pack food labelling system across its retail portfolio in Australia and New Zealand over the next four years, starting with the largest categories – milk and juice. This will be supported by information to help consumers make better and more informed product choices. Our commitment is to have the HSR on 100% of our retail portfolio by 2018.
The HSR system was developed collaboratively by industry, government and health organisations, and is similar to energy ratings used on white goods with products scoring between ½ to 5 stars, with 5 stars being the best. Food and beverages are assessed based on their energy, fat, sugar and salt content, as well as protein, fibre, and fruit and vegetable content. This aims to give consumers ‘at-a-glance’ nutrition information by indicating the overall healthiness of a product when comparing like-for-like products, e.g. milk to milk; cereal with cereal.
Adopting best practice, front-of-pack labelling is part of Lion Dairy & Drinks’ The Goodness Project commitments – an internal business initiative helping guide our product innovation and communications, with the overall aim of helping to improve the health and wellbeing of our consumers.
This labelling change will be supplemented by other on and off-pack education initiatives, designed to help increase the nutritional literacy of our consumers and their ability to make healthier choices as part of a balanced diet and active lifestyle.
