21st December 2018:
Iconic Wellington coffee company Havana Coffee Works, is proud to announce that their ship and superb crew will be joining the Lion fleet - entrusting the company as custodians of their legacy as they set sail for new horizons.
The news comes as Havana enters its 30th year, with the new partnership providing an exciting platform to support Havana in realising its ambitions for the future. Havana is one of the nation’s original coffee brands, and co-founder Geoff Marsland was at the forefront of establishing the vibrant coffee culture we now have in New Zealand - in his words “the coffee revolution!”
There was a clear connection between Lion and Havana from the start – both companies have a strong heritage in NZ’s hospitality scene and share a deep passion for premium products and bringing people together.
Geoff Marsland says: “We’ve been approached by many others over the years, but it’s only now that it feels right. Lion has shown a huge amount of respect for the Havana story and personality. Landing the right partner means we can maintain our unique identity and look after our awesome crew, farmers and customers while having support to realise a few krazy dreams!” “I have always known I’d never let Havana be gobbled up by another big coffee company. Lion have an amazing culture and have done an excellent job growing their craft beverage brands while maintaining their unique personalities and legacies. The Havana brand has always been the coffee of the people. This partnership will allow us to continue to grow naturally and give more coffee lovers the chance to discover our magic.”
Havana will run as a standalone division so it’s very much coffee business as usual for the Havana ship. Its delicious COFFEE U FEEL, incredible culture and long-term crew won’t change, and its spiritual home will remain firmly docked at its Wellington HQ.
Rory Glass, Lion NZ Managing Director, says: “Lion is incredibly proud to welcome Havana and its passionate coffee lovers into the Lion family. Havana really is the jewel in the crown when it comes to coffee in New Zealand, with one of the nation’s coffee pioneers at its helm. It’s set to be a great partnership. Geoff and his crew have so much passion and experience to share with us and we’re going to help make some of their dreams a reality.
“In today’s hospitality environment Kiwis are just as likely to catch up with a mate over a coffee as they are over a beer or wine, and for Lion to stay at the heart of sociability, it made sense for us to explore how we could build our offering in this space. Havana’s vibrant, super premium brand and delicious coffee will provide huge opportunities for us to play a meaningful role in more of life’s social moments. Together, we’ll harness the strengths of both organisations to create a sensational future,” Rory continues.
“My crew and I are staying on to steer Havana into this new era and we’ll ensure we maintain the soul, super premium quality, amazing service and fun that we’re known for. I completely believe in the energy of Havana and our magnificent crew and I’m excited to have Lions by our side.” adds Geoff.
