Hahn has returned as the Official Beer of the Wallabies in a new two-year partnership with Rugby Australia.

After more than a decade away, Hahn has today announced its return as the Official Beer of the Wallabies, marking a new two-year partnership with Rugby Australia at a defining moment for the game in Australia.

The partnership unites Hahn and the Wallabies in a shared ambition to celebrate the places and moments that bring rugby fans together, whether that be in sold-out stadiums, local pubs, rugby clubhouses or lounge rooms across the country.

Rugby experienced a huge uplift 12-months ago when the British & Irish Lions Tour returned to Australia and this partnership aims to continue that momentum as excitement continues to build around Australian rugby leading into 2027. Hahn and Rugby Australia will work together to elevate the fan experience, create more occasions for supporters to connect with the game, together they will welcome new fans and lapsed fans back into the rugby fold.

From the Wallaby changerooms to Wallaby House fan activations, Hahn products will be enjoyed by players and fans alike, beginning with the Wallabies opening home Test against Ireland at Allianz Stadium on 4 July.

Stone & Wood's Festival of the Stone 2026 raises record amount for Fletcher Street Cottage

The 2026 edition of the annual event raised more than $30,000.

Stone & Wood is thrilled to announce that the 2026 edition of Festival of the Stone has raised a record amount of $30,419 for Fletcher Street Cottage, Byron’s vital community hub providing services and support for people experiencing personal hardship.

Held on Saturday 20 June at Stone & Wood’s Byron Bay brewery, the annual festival welcomed a sold-out crowd of 2,000 people for sets by Pacific Avenue, Ruby Fields, Dear Seattle, Eliza & The Delusionals and local act Drover.

Alongside the bands on the outdoor stage, patrons danced to DJs on the Brew Deck, tucked into delicious food and enjoyed the 2026 edition of the festival’s namesake Stone Brew Beer. Good times all round!

The funds raised will go directly towards supporting Fletcher Street Cottage to deliver vital services and programs for locals experiencing homelessness and hardship. This includes meals, showers, crisis relief, housing support and a dedicated Women’s Space.

LION confirms closure of James Boag Brewery

LION has confirmed the decision to close the James Boag Brewery in Launceston.

LION today confirmed the decision to close the James Boag Brewery in Launceston, with brewing operations to cease and the brewery to close on 6 November 2026.

This decision follows a consultation process LION has undertaken with impacted team members since announcing the proposal in early June.

The long-term decline in the national beer market has caused the brewery to operate significantly under capacity for many years – it is currently operating at about a fifth of its capacity. This, combined with significant cost inflation, means the brewery is no longer viable.

LION CEO & Managing Director Anubha Sahasrabuddhe said: “We know this is difficult news for our Boag’s Brewery team and the broader Launceston community. I sincerely apologise for the impact this decision will have.

“This decision is no reflection on the incredible capability, passion and commitment of our 42 brewery team members, and the many more who have come before them, who have worked hard to operate the brewery as efficiently as possible despite decreasing volumes.

“Since announcing the proposal on 2 June, we have received a wide range of feedback from our team, the United Workers Union, members of the community and other stakeholders. We have carefully considered every piece of feedback we received.

“After considering all of the feedback received during consultation, we have concluded that the structural challenges facing the brewery cannot be overcome and have made the difficult decision to proceed with the closure.

“While we continue to engage openly and constructively with a number of parties, it is not our intention to sell the James Boag’s brand – we remain committed to both Tasmania and supporting the James Boag’s brand.

“We will continue to work closely with the City of Launceston, the Tasmanian Government and other stakeholders on the future of the brewery site, ensuring we play our part to support the preservation of the site’s heritage while transitioning custodianship to a new owner who can revitalise it for its next chapter.”

The closure will impact the roles of 42 people employed at the James Boag Brewery. LION is working directly with affected team members to provide support, explore redeployment opportunities across its brewing network and assist them through the transition.

LION will honour all employee entitlements, including redundancy payments for team members who are unable to be redeployed. Supporting our people remains our priority. We have established a comprehensive people support program to help team members transition into new employment, including outplacement support and access to the James Boag Brewery Reskilling Fund.

The James Boag’s brand will continue to be brewed in other world-class breweries across LION’s network in line with stringent quality standards. The recently reopened Boag’s Brewhouse will continue to operate as the home of the brand, and LION will continue to sell its portfolio in Tasmania and maintain local sales and hospitality teams.

As part of its commitment to supporting its people and the broader Tasmanian community, LION will:

Reskilling Fund: Establish a James Boag Brewery Reskilling Fund of up to $500,000 to support team members who are unable to be redeployed across LION’s network in finding new employment, in addition to any redundancy payments and other employee entitlements.
Community Fund: Establish the James Boag’s Community Fund, providing $500,000 in funding over five years through partnerships and grants for grassroots organisations across Launceston and Northern Tasmania.
Boag’s Brewhouse: Repay the $1 million grant contributed by the Tasmanian Government towards the redevelopment of the Boag’s Brewhouse.
Future of the site: LION will also continue to engage openly and constructively on the future of the site and seek opportunities to capture the stories, people and sounds of the brewery while creating opportunities for team members and the community to acknowledge and celebrate the 145-year legacy of the James Boags Brewery. We are also actively exploring small-scale on-island brewing opportunities within Launceston and Northern Tasmania. Should this be achievable, it will be small-scale production of some draught products for sale in the Boag’s Brewhouse and select venues in Launceston.

LION pilots new sustainable Steinlager returnable format

Steinlager Returnables projected to cut overall carbon emissions by more than 60% compared to single-use cans or bottles.

LION has launched a returnable crate and bottle system for iconic New Zealand beer, Steinlager.
Modernising the classic Kiwi Swappa Crate, the pilot uses digital tracing to make it easier than ever.
The project forms part of LION’s broader sustainability ambitions as a B Corp certified business.

LION is piloting a new returnable crate and bottle system for Steinlager. Available at 48 Super Liquor stores across Auckland, the pilot modernises the classic Kiwi Swappa Crate by removing the deposit and adding digital tracking to make the consumer experience of reusable bottles easier than ever.

While circular beer bottles and digital tracking exist separately, LION is the first in the world to successfully combine them. This integrated system makes the return process seamless, moving beyond traditional models to create a smarter way to reuse glass.

The system also introduces a smaller 330mL bottle format – a key differentiator from traditional 745mL swappa beer bottles – designed to better suit modern drinking occasions and consumer preferences.

LION says the Auckland pilot is intentionally being treated as a “test and learn” phase, designed to understand how consumers engage with the system in real-world conditions before considering broader expansion.

LION Strategy Director John Steiner said the pilot had been more than four years in the making, involving extensive consumer research, packaging development and technological innovation.

“We know Kiwis increasingly want sustainable options, but only if they’re genuinely easy to use,” says Steiner.

“To scale and modernise the traditional circular beer bottle model, we had to tackle several challenges. By digitising and simplifying borrowing and returns, removing the need to pay a deposit, and updating the format to 330mL bottles, we’ve completely reimagined the experience for consumers.”

Evaluated by Toitū Envirocare, at scale, the new returnable glass system has the potential to slash overall carbon emissions by 64% over its entire lifecycle, compared with LION’s existing single-use cans and bottles. This would offer people a genuinely sustainable choice with the same quality and convenience.

A ‘library-style’ system for beer

LION’s new returnables scheme works like a library system for beer. Instead of buying the crate and the bottles, you simply borrow and return it.

“It’s a simple check out system. You borrow the packaging, return it when you’re done. You buy the beer, not the bottles!” says Steiner.

Consumers register once in-store with their name and phone number, then use a unique barcode to check crates out and back in when finished. Digital tracking allows LION to keep tabs on the crates in circulation while keeping the experience fast and seamless at the checkout.

Four years of innovation behind the scenes

The project has been more than four years in development and forms part of LION’s broader sustainability ambitions and Force for Good strategy, already as a certified B Corp business.

LION partnered with Datacom to help develop the technology platform underpinning the pilot, following an intensive innovation sprint focused on creating a seamless consumer experience.

The initiative also required the development of entirely new packaging. LION has developed a purpose-built returnable bottle designed to better withstand multiple reuse cycles, alongside durable crates made from 100% recycled plastic.

A vision to scale

Early signs have been encouraging, with strong initial sales and positive customer feedback.

“We’re collecting data, understanding behaviours, and continuing to refine the experience. The long-term ambition is to understand how a system like this will work at scale across New Zealand,” says Steiner.

Steinlager was selected for the trial due to its broad consumer appeal and strong sustainability credentials, with Steinlager already certified Toitū Carbon Zero.

LION today announced a proposal to close the James Boag’s Brewery in Launceston in November 2026.

The proposed closure would impact the roles of 42 people employed at James Boag’s Brewery.

Consultation conversations are now taking place with team members to work through the proposed impacts, before a final decision is made and redeployment opportunities across LION’s brewing network are explored.

If the proposal is implemented LION will honour all employee entitlements, including redundancy payments to those team members impacted by this proposal who are unable to be redeployed. LION’s personal support service is available for all team members.

Tasmania remains important for LION. The James Boag’s brand will continue to be brewed in other world-class breweries in LION’s network in line with stringent quality standards. The newly reopened Boag’s Brewhouse will continue to operate as the home of the brand and LION will continue to offer its portfolio in Tasmania and to maintain a sales and hospitality team.

If the proposal is implemented, LION will:

Massive XXXX cans have flown over the iconic Sydney Harbour in the name of the Queensland Maroons.

The move was a display of Queensland pride in the name of the Maroons, ahead of game 1 of the men’s State of Origin in Sydney.

In what is being described as the ultimate airborne sledge, iconic Queensland beer XXXX has officially taken the State of Origin rivalry to new heights. This morning, Sydneysiders woke up to a spectacle that turned the sky over the Sydney Harbour a distinct shade of Queensland GOLD.

To signal the start of the 2026 State of Origin series, XXXX flew its massive, four-meter-tall ‘Postcode’ cans directly over the heart of Blues territory, in the iconic Sydney Harbour, all in the name of the mighty Queensland Maroons. As game one kicks off in Sydney on Wednesday night, XXXX is showing that Queensland spirit is impossible to ignore.

By donning the ‘4064’ postcode, XXXX has transported the homeland of the Milton Brewery and Suncorp Stadium to the Sydney skyline, to make a sweeping statement of Queensland pride.

The four giant XXXX GOLD cans, each a beacon of Maroon pride, were navigated via high-tech drone formation across the Sydney Harbour, providing a golden crown over the Coathanger.

The custom helium-inflatable PVC cans are digitally printed to match the limited-edition XXXX GOLD Postcode packaging. This activation is a bold play by XXXX and Queenslanders to get first points on the board, teasing a response from New South Wales.

Speight’s New Zealand is marking its 150th anniversary, celebrating the rise of one of the country’s most enduring and recognisable beer brands.

From its beginnings in a Dunedin brewery on Rattray Street in 1876, Speight’s has grown from a small local brewery to being New Zealand’s number one selling beer.

Today, 150 years on, Speight’s sells 1 million litres every week^[1] and now accounts for around 1 in 5 beers sold in New Zealand^[2], a testament to a brand that has mastered the art of balancing deep-rooted heritage with innovation.

LION Chief Operating Officer and New Zealand Country Director Craig Baldie says the anniversary reflects a brand that has continually moved with the times.

A brand that grew with the country

From the moment it was founded, Speight’s was part of something bigger than beer.

Founded by James Speight, Charles Greenslade and William Dawson, the brewery quickly found its footing in a fast-growing Dunedin, at a time when the city was one of the country’s busiest and most influential centres.

By the late 1880s, Speight’s had taken its place on the world stage, winning gold medals at international exhibitions and earning the name Gold Medal Ale, a legacy still stamped on every label today. Within just over a decade, it had become the largest brewery in the country, exporting across the Pacific and putting Dunedin on the map as a brewing powerhouse.

One-hundred-and-fifty years on, the brewery still stands on that same site as a landmark of the city and a reflection of the role it has played in shaping Dunedin’s identity.

Few brands are as deeply woven into New Zealand’s cultural fabric. From the era-defining Southern Man ads to the enduring “Good on ya, mate”, Speight’s has helped shape – and reflect – a distinctly Kiwi idea of mateship.

Over the years, those stories have evolved with the times. Campaigns like The Dance portrayed a more modern take on friendship and having someone’s back. Showing that the expression of mateship may shift but the sentiment behind it remains the same – that a Speight’s drinker is always there to help a mate.

Add to that decades of the Speight’s beloved bottle cap questions, backing southern rugby, and even shipping a pub halfway across the world, and it’s clear Speight’s has long held a place at the heart of Kiwi culture.

A rise 150 years in the making

While Speight’s has been part of New Zealand’s brewing landscape for 150 years, its position as the country’s leading beer brand has been cemented more recently, at a time when the category itself is under pressure.

Beer consumption has declined both in New Zealand and globally, with Stats NZ data showing beer consumption fell 10% to 265 million litres last year, continuing a longer-term downward trend^[3]. Despite falling total beer sales, in the same year, Speight’s grew 4.4%^[1], which reinforces the strength of the brand throughout the country.

A key inflection point came in 2017 with the launch of Speight’s Summit Ultra, developed in response to growing demand for lower-carb options. It has since become the top-selling beer in New Zealand, helping Speight’s become the biggest beer brand in the country in 2022.

“We identified early that consumers overseas were looking for lighter styles of beer that aligned with more balanced lifestyles, without compromising on taste,” says Baldie.

“Summit Ultra has been instrumental in reshaping the brand’s trajectory and has played a significant role in its recent growth.”

Alongside its flagship Gold Medal Ale, the range now spans everything from craft brews to lighter and alcohol-free options, ensuring the brand continues to resonate with drinkers today.

Speight's celebrations

To mark its 150th anniversary, Speight’s has released a commemorative can available nationwide. In recognition of its Dunedin roots, Speight’s are also releasing a limited-edition Whisky Collection based at the Dunedin brewery and a Gold Medal Hokey Pokey ice cream collaboration with Patti’s & Cream. A commemorative event will also be held at the Dunedin brewery to recognise the brand’s origins and ongoing connection to the region.

“This anniversary is an opportunity to acknowledge the role Speight’s has played in New Zealand’s history, as well as the people who have contributed to its success over the years. It’s also an exciting moment to celebrate Speight’s legacy and look ahead, with confidence in the brand’s continued growth,” says Baldie.

Cowboys fans and XXXX turn match day passion into $10,000 donation for the reef

XXXX pledged $2 from every beer it sold during the Cowboys home opener earlier this year.

The North Queensland Cowboys and long-standing partner XXXX have kicked off the season by raising $10,000 for the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, thanks to the overwhelming support of Cowboys fans during the Opening Round at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

XXXX pledged $2 from every beer sold during the home opener, allowing Cowboys fans to back the Reef by simply sipping on a schooner. The North Queensland community rose to the occasion in style, proving that their passion for the region extends far beyond the footy field and into the corals of the Great Barrier Reef.

The $10,000 donation will fund pioneering research aimed at strengthening the natural heat tolerance of corals. This scientific intervention is critical in helping the Reef survive more frequent and intense marine heatwaves.

Great Barrier Reef Foundation Managing Director, Anna Marsden added: “What a result. This $10,000 contribution from the Cowboys and XXXX fans helps support critical research focused on strengthening the heat tolerance of corals. At a time when the Reef is under increasing pressure from marine heatwaves, partnerships like this play an important role in helping accelerate promising solutions from the lab into the water.”

The partnership between XXXX and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation began in 2022, with the brand investing $1 million in the restoration and health of the reef’s waterways.

Tooheys, the beer of New South Wales, has announced the highly-anticipated return of Tooheys Old Dark Ale in 375ml cans. The launch marks the first time in decades that the heritage brew has been available in the canned format, following overwhelming demand from its loyal consumer base.

First brewed in 1869, Tooheys Old has been a mainstay of Australian pubs for over 150 years, maintaining a dedicated following for its unique top-fermentation process and roasted malt profile. Traditionally a staple of the tap-and-glass landscape, the reintroduction of a canned format ensures that one of Australia’s most loved dark ales is now more accessible and portable than ever before.
